Every shop needs a solid workbench. This design uses common 2x4 lumber and basic tools — no fancy joinery required. The result is a heavy, stable bench that can take serious abuse.
Materials List
- • (10) 2x4x8 studs
- • (2) 2x6x8 boards (for the top)
- • (1) sheet 3/4" plywood (lower shelf)
- • 3" deck screws (1 lb box)
- • 2-1/2" pocket hole screws (50 count)
- • Wood glue
Estimated cost: $60-80 at Home Depot (check current prices)
Tools Needed
- • Circular saw or miter saw
- • Drill/driver
- • Pocket hole jig (our recommendation)
- • Speed square
- • Tape measure
- • Clamps (at least 4)
Step 1: Cut the Legs
Cut four legs from 2x4s at 34 inches (or your preferred height minus the top thickness). Sand the ends smooth.
Step 2: Build the End Frames
Connect two legs with short 2x4 stretchers at top and bottom using pocket hole screws. Make two identical end frames. The top stretcher should be flush with the leg tops. Bottom stretcher sits 6 inches from the floor.
Step 3: Connect the Frames
Join the two end frames with long 2x4 stretchers front and back, both top and bottom. This creates the base structure. Check for square with a tape measure (diagonals should be equal).
Step 4: Build the Top
Laminate 2x4s and 2x6s edge-to-edge with glue and clamps to form a thick, heavy top. Let it dry overnight. Flatten with a hand plane or belt sander.
Step 5: Attach the Top & Shelf
Screw the top to the base from underneath. Cut a plywood shelf to fit between the bottom stretchers for storage. No need to attach it — gravity and the stretchers hold it in place.
