Finish Wood Like a Pro

A great finish can make a simple project look stunning, while a bad one can ruin hours of work. Here's how to get professional results with common finishing products.

Preparation is Everything

Before any finish goes on, the wood needs to be properly prepared:

  • Sand progressively: Start at 80 grit, move to 120, then 150 or 180. Never skip grits.
  • Remove dust: Wipe with a tack cloth or damp rag between sanding and finishing.
  • Raise the grain: For water-based finishes, wipe with a damp cloth first, let dry, then lightly sand with 220. This prevents a rough feel after the first coat.

Oil Finishes

Oil finishes (Danish oil, tung oil, boiled linseed oil) soak into the wood and enhance its natural beauty. They're forgiving and easy to apply.

Best for:

  • Rustic furniture and hand tools
  • Projects where a natural, matte look is desired
  • Pieces that might get dinged (easy to touch up)

How to apply:

  1. Flood the surface with oil using a rag or brush
  2. Let it soak for 15-20 minutes
  3. Wipe off ALL excess (this is critical)
  4. Let dry 24 hours, apply 2-3 coats total

Polyurethane

Polyurethane builds a hard, protective film on the surface. Oil-based poly adds warmth; water-based stays clear.

Best for:

  • Table tops, desks, and high-wear surfaces
  • Kitchen projects
  • Any piece that needs durability

Pro tips:

  • Thin the first coat 50/50 with mineral spirits for better penetration
  • Sand lightly with 220 between coats
  • Apply 3 coats minimum for tables
  • Use a high-quality natural bristle brush for oil-based

Wipe-On Finishes

Products like Arm-R-Seal and wipe-on poly give you the protection of polyurethane with the ease of oil application. Our #1 recommendation for most projects.

How to apply:

  1. Apply a thin coat with a lint-free rag or foam pad
  2. Wipe in the direction of the grain
  3. Let dry 4-6 hours
  4. Lightly sand with 320 or fine steel wool between coats
  5. Apply 4-5 thin coats for best results

Staining

Stain changes the color but doesn't protect. Always apply a topcoat over stain.

  • Pre-stain conditioner is essential for soft woods like pine to prevent blotching
  • Apply with a rag, wipe off excess after 5-10 minutes
  • One coat is usually enough; more coats darken slightly
  • Let dry fully (24 hours oil-based, 4 hours water-based) before topcoat
